About Us
In the Spring of 2019 Kay Nelson and her St. Vincent de Paul team at St Charles Borromeo parish began planning for their September Friends of the Poor Walk. They dreamed of bringing lots of folks together to serve and build relationships. Down the street, Rev. Matthew Mariani at First United Methodist Church of Hampshire and his team of local churches were also dreaming dreams of helping neighbors and bringing the community together for their September CROP Hunger Walk. The two teamed up and brought on board St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Elgin and St. John United Church of Christ in Harmony and the dream was set into motion: Two Walks. One Day. Many walking together to make a difference.
Each walk supports a different organization. Walkers for both organizations start and finish together at the Ralph H. Seyller Park in Hampshire. Our shared goals are to raise money and awareness for our neighbors in need, to bring together new friends in the community and to celebrate everyone’s efforts.
Friends of the Poor Walk supports the work of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, offering tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis in our community. 100% of money raised goes to help people in the Diocesan Council of Rockford, IL.
CROP Hunger Walk helps provide food and clean water as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. 25% of money raised goes directly to the Burlington-Hampshire Food Pantry.
